Abstract

In this paper road accidents in Saudi Arabia are analysed and measures to reduce them suggested. A number of factors are identified which have contributed to a high incidence of road casualties, including rapid economic growth and a fast road network. Casualties are found to be 50% pedestrians, 40% vehicle occupants and 12% two-wheeler riders. The problems of each category are considered and suggestions made to improve the situation. In the case of pedestrians, separation from traffic, traffic calming, and safety campaigns are recommended. For vehicle occupants, high profile traffic policing, technological aids such as videos and red light cameras and an accurate accident reporting system are recommended. For two-wheeler riders the most important measures are mandatory helmet wearing and mandatory leg guards.
