Abstract

The Drinking Driving Research Unit (DDRU) is part of the Addictio Research Foundation, an agency of the Province of Ontario. The purpose of the Foundation is to help reduce the pain, suffering a lost human potential caused by excessive and inappropriate use of alcohol and other drugs. The DDRU was created in 1982, its aim b to reduce drinking- driving behaviour and the consequences thereo The focus has been on Haddon's model of injury control which is achieved by (1) preventing the crash and (2) reducing the consequ of the crash. Analysis of data collected provides insights into lifestyles, attitudes and personalities of crashed alcohol- posit and alcohol-negative problem drivers and the recovery of alcohol- positive and alcohol-negative trauma victims. Research focuses on primary, secondary and tertiary intervention strategies, i.e. red the incidence of new cases through education (primary); deterring current drink-drivers (secondary); and rehabilitation for persist offenders (tertiary). This systematic investigation of the three intervention approaches to reduce drinking-driving behaviour has allowed the DDRU to offer researchers and policy makers a realist perspective of what it is possible to achieve and by what methods
