Abstract

This article illustrates a vehicle impact test undertaken to evaluate and compare vehicle and occupant responses in vehicle-to-vehicle crash tests against full frontal rigid barrier crash tests in support of the vehicle compatibility research plan. This test included a 2002 Tundra Pickup truck and a 2004 Accord sedan colliding head-on at 58 mph closing speed. Both vehicles were instrumented with accelerometers to measure longitudinal, lateral vehicle axis accelerations. This impact test was 0% offset, 0 degree. The article briefly outlines the equipment in each vehicle and the effects of the crash on the driver-seat and passenger seat crash test dummies. One table summarizes the vehicles' crush profiles. A related article repeating the study at a different offset is included in the same issue.
