Abstract

In a small but significant number of accidents there is loss of air in 1 or more tires, an event which could adversely affect handling and rollover characteristics of the vehicle. In instances such as this, questions may arise as to how long it took the air to escape from the tire, and when this loss of air occurred in relation to the remainder of the accident. This paper aims to answer the question of how long it takes for tire air to escape, given a certain size puncture hole and certain initial conditions. Results presented in this study are applicable for tires at any temperature and volume, any initial inflation pressure, and any atmospheric pressure. The analysis presented herein is intended to be used for relatively large holes; that is, holes that could be described as blowouts rather than leaks.
