Abstract

The continued popularity of light trucks and sport utility vehicles in the U.S. , as well as the need to better protect passengers of varying sizes, has motivated the automotive industry to improve vehicle occupant protection. This article examines the advanced airbag modifications to the occupant crash protection standard, FMVSS 208 (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard), which are seen as perhaps the most far reaching and complicated rule issued by the United States Highway Traffic Safety Administration since the inception of the agency in 1968. According to the revisions, belted or unbelted occupants of different sizes, including out of position small women and children, will get improved protection during a frontal crash as suppliers and automakers continue to develop and define safety standards
