Abstract

This head-on vehicle-to-vehicle impact test was sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The aim was to evaluate and compare vehicle and occupant responses in vehicle-to-vehicle crash tests against full frontal rigid barrier crash tests. The bullet vehicle, a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab impacted the target vehicle, a 2004 Honda Accord EX 4-door sedan, head-on. The vehicles were offset 50% to the driver side. The Dodge pickup sustained a maximum of 17.5" of static crush at the lower bumpers left edge. Measurements taken at the bottom of the front bumper averaged 6.4". The driver seat dummy's 36-ms and 15-ms head injury criteria (HIC) were 238 and 233, respectively. Its chest deceleration was measured at 20.6g. The Accord sustained a maximum of 35.6" of static crush at the left front corner of the bumper. The driver-seat dummy's HICs were 357 and 185. Its chest deceleration was measured at 36.0g.
