Abstract

For many years, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has conducted extensive crash testing, the primary goal of which was to evaluate a vehicle's occupant protection capability. During much of this testing, residual crush data was also recorded. The editor of this publication has recently obtained electronic copies of crash test reports for 2006 vehicles, and the data from these reports are presented in this article in the form of a large table. Test speeds and crush dimensions were converted to English units, and listed curb weight was the weight of the vehicle as it was delivered to the testing agency. Test weight is the vehicle weight with fluids removed and cameras, data collection equipment, and crash test dummies added. The editor recommends that curb weight rather than test weight be used in determining constants for CRASH III analysis.
