Abstract

In an automobile accident in which a passenger vehicle in a critical speed or "yaw" situation crosses the highway and strikes a van going in the opposite direction, serious injury or fatality due to high speeds and collision forces often results. In the past, the most often challenged finding of the accident investigator or reconstructionist has been a speed determination from skid mark evidence. Since the early 1940s many court decisions have been rendered regarding the ability of an accident investigator or reconstructionist to provide a speed determination determined from skid marks. Over the many years since these early decisions it has become a widely accepted practice in court presentations.
