Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a major sidewalk installation project along a 12-block section of International Boulevard in SeaTac, Washington. The project was a part of a significant enhancement project. The data collection protocol was developed to determine the effct of sidewalk construction on pedestrian behavior. The observation period was before 1997 and after 1998. The results indicated that, overall, the effects of the improvement project were very positive. More pedestrians were walking further and they were not walking on the shoulder, and there were noticeable reductions in midblock crossings, jaywalking, and pedestrian/motorist conflicts.
