Abstract

Many individuals involved in accident reconstruction and faced with the task of analyzing a railroad train-motor vehicle collision at a rail-highway crossing refer to various texts, and specifically, to tables within the texts that establish required sight distance values for varying approach speeds of roadway vehicles and trains. This article discusses the data contained in the tables in the AASHTO and U.S. DOT texts, upon which the accepted sight distance guidelines are based.
