Abstract

On May 10, 1996, the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) received an invitation to attend a staged, locomotive versus passenger car collision being conducted on behalf of "Operation Lifesaver." The collision was scheduled for Tuesday May 14, 1996, at 10 a.m. in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. Realizing the valuable data to be gathered during this event, the Bureau of Patrol mustered what little data collection equipment was available on short notice. Five months later, with the help of Consolidated Railways Corporation (CONRAIL), the Pennsylvania State Police conducted a second staged collision, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The data obtained will be used to aid in the investigation of future railroad grade crossing collisions.
