Abstract

This article looks at the problem of trailer underride accidents -- those involving a passenger car and a semi trailer truck. Specific elements that investigators should consider are: disabled rig; napping driver; fuel receipts; tail lamp function; photographs of accident site. The author discusses recommendations for height of rear underride guards, the issue of side underrides and energy-absorbing rear truck bumpers. Night visibility and driver error are also discussed.
