Abstract

Data were examined from 18 snowmobile accident surveys, gathered from a variety of sources (medical journals, conference papers, safety councils, police, department of motor vehicles reports, etc.) Statistics from these surveys were summarized on the basis of several variables, including location and type of accident, day, time of day, nature of injury, and age and sex of victim. The results of the reports were found to be meaningless by themselves, and the futility of attempting to interpret such data without additional information was illustrated. The inadequacies of these data, and of snowmobile reporting in general, were pointed out. The need for baseline data on exposure to risk was discussed and suggestions were made for methods of gathering such information.
