Abstract

Brookes, F.R., 1983. Explosions initiated by welding the rims of wheels fitted with tubeless tyres. Journal of Occupational Accidents, 5 : 149-160.Air leaks can occur through the rims of wheels fitted with tubeless tyres and it appears to be the practice in some cases to repair the defect causing the leak by welding the rim, without removing the tyre. This paper discusses two cases in which tyres had not been removed and had burst during or shortly after welding the rim and describes the experiments done to determine the cause. One of the tyres was deflated and the other was thought to have been inflated before the welding started.
