Abstract

Singapore is an urbanized city state. The residential areas, industrial areas and central business districts are linked by expressways, arterial roads, collector roads, local access roads and more than 1500 signalized intersections. As such, it is prudent that we have a good understanding of the characteristics of accidents that occurred at these types of locations so that we can target our efforts to incorporate the necessary measures to improve safety at these locations. Accident characteristics of expressways, one-way roads, two-way divided/undivided roads, slip roads and junctions are analyzed in this paper, with reference to vulnerable road uses such as pedestrians and motorcyclists. Brief descriptions of existing or possible new measures to manage the identified accident characteristics are also mentioned in this paper.
