Abstract

In summary then, the preliminary data of the Foster Care Enrichment Program indicates that therapeutic foster care can and does exist and that decisions regarding children in foster care can and should be made in a short period of time. Foster families can be recruited who are able and willing to nurture families as well as children. Easily available professional support is necessary and effective, frequent communication of all parties involved is absolutely essential. Short-term foster care can be effective in alleviating crisis situations, offering a diagnostic safe period and establishing therapeutic relationships. The Foster Care Enrichment Program has put into effect what has been known for many years to be good foster care. The program has outlined the needs of foster care and its recipients and ways to fulfill and maximize the goals of foster care. One of the most exacting aspects of our particular program is that the Denver Department of Welfare is actively exploring ways of incorporating program goals and techniques into its larger system.
