Abstract

Findings in a study involving drink drivers carried out at the University of Greifswald in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern reveal that the main reasons for not participating in rehabilitation programmes are limited problem awareness on part of drink drivers, lack of information, passiveness of public authorities, costs and the limited accessibility of counselling programmes. In the light of these results, we analyzed the underlying processes in health promotion of drink drivers. Our findings suggest that a change in strategic procedure and a pro-active approach, focussing on the counselling activities of the police and the courts, personalized and obligating invitations for counselling as soon after the offence as possible, information about possible incentives (like reduction oft the legal ban period, avoiding the medical psychological testing or obtaining an expert opinion with a success rate of over 90%) and lowering the problems of communication between offenders and providers of information could be starting points to optimize processes in health promotion.
