Abstract

In a recently published study SCHEUCHER, EGGERDINGER and ASCHERSLEBEN presented the results of a driver improvement programme ("Nuchtern fahren" - " Sober driving") five years after the end of treatment. First, the question of whether the conclusion drawn by the authors can be deduced from the empirical data presented is discussed. Using this study as an example, some general aspects for evaluating the effects of driver improvement programmes are discussed. Finally, there are some comments on the question of who defines the aims of such a treatment. This is followed by a comparison of rather controversial opinions held by STEPHAN and KORKEL with regard to whether treatment should be concentrated on strict abstinence or controlled drinking.
