Abstract

25 years of research in Germany dealing with the estimated number of undetected cases of drink driving are discussed in this article. Not unlike previous discussions the recent controversy between the research by Kruger et al. on the one hand and Iffland on the other hand is based on insufficient data. Research dealing with the overall estimated number of undetected cases of drink driving is not of the criminological value that it had previously been given. In the second part of the article the author analyses if the reduction of the estimated number of undetected cases of drinking driving can be achieved by means of the introduction of the breath alcohol test in section 24 a StVG. This is where certain expectations of supporters are dampened.
