Abstract

A study material of 199 matched pairs of drivers accused of drunken driving was examined. One group was accused in the ordinary way after having attracted the attention of the police owing to a traffic offence. The other group was stopped 'by chance' by a police control according to Section 13 of the Road Traffic Act. It was desired to provide information as to whether these groups with identical blood alcohol levels differed with regard to influence of alcohol. The material showed inconsistency in 67 pairs; 34 of these proved not to be under influence of alcohol in the Section 13 cases and under influence in the other cases, whereas 33 showed the reverse. It is concluded that the persons who in the ordinary way are accused of drunken driving do not differ from car-drivers in general as far as tolerance of alcohol is concerned.
