Abstract

Many studies have shown that substance abuse had direct connection with suicidal behavior and suicide. Suicide rate is higher among alcohol and other substance abusers than in the general population. There are only a few studies describing potential protective effects of substance abuse on suicidal behavior. Goal: To identify protective effects of alcohol and other drug abuse on suicidal behavior. Sample: 30 alcohol and other drug addicts (ICD-10 criteria), who used substances at the time of suicidal behavior. Method: Psychological examination MMPI, Beck scale of depression and special questionnaire concerning substance abuse patterns at the time of suicidal behavior. Results: There are clear connections between suicidal behavior (suicidal ideas, tentamen suicide) and specific pattern of substance use (amounts, type of beverages, frequency of use, poly drug use, etc.). These specific patterns of substance abuse at the time of suicidal behavior we considered as a protective factors against suicide.
