Abstract

Concrete median barriers (CMB) are often used to separate opposing traffic lanes on urban freeways. Long, continuous CMBs can limit access of emergency and maintenance vehicles to the other side of the roads. Periodic implementation of median barrier gates can help protect motorists while allowing for cross median access for authorized vehicles. This article describes the development and crash testing of a media barrier gate designed to meet the Test Level 3 (TL-3) impact performance requirements of the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH). Three tests were performed to meet the different aspects of the design. The median barrier gate passed all the evaluation criteria for each test and met the TL-3 impact performance requirements of MASH. (TRID)
