Abstract

Family violence has been recognized as an international epidemic for over a decade, and our knowledge base has increased dramatically during this time. We now have more information and research to help us in understanding the issues, the characteristics of the victims and offenders, and the etiologies of many aspects of the problem. However, we still do not have adequate research concerning the interrelationship of physical violence and psychological maltreatment within the family, and the reasons why some children and adults are resilient to the long-term consequences. We also do not have sufficient data regarding the effectiveness of intervention programs. The purpose of this article is to discuss some of the major issues, interventions, and research questions facing us, and some of the approaches that various professionals in the domestic violence field have taken in an attempt to address these concerns. Additionally, some of the innovative approaches, programs, theories, and research described in this volume are introduced and described.
