Abstract

The installation of 1.9 m wide speed cushions at Carmody Street and Hermit Park in Townsville (Australia) to find its effects on speed and traffic volumes is discussed. Traffic surveys were carried out 16 months before installation where a number of keypoints were identified such as the proportion of drivers exceeding the speed limit fell from 57% to less than 3%, excessive speeding was reduced, and the average daily traffic dropped by about 600. The measured speeds are consistent with an 85th percentile speed at the devices of about 30 km/h and the speeds along the street appear to be fluctuating mainly between 10 and 20 km/h. It is suggested that measurements of speed effects of other applications of speed cushions will be needed before firmer guidance can be given.
