Abstract

Large vehicles tend to deviate from a straight path in three modes: slight deviation at low speed, weaving at medium speed, and oscillation at high speed. To understand the modes, a linear 4DOF model consisting of one sprung mass and two unsprung masses at the front and the rear is developed. By analysis of calculations and experiments of vehicle behaviour and eigenvalues, it was found that the instance compliance centres of the front and rear strongly effect the on-centre stability. The further the instance centre is towards the front and the rear, the better the on-centre stability.
