Abstract

Over the years, a bend in one of Buckinghamshire's roads has been proving a serious hazard to motorcyclists. Under the leadership of Malcolm James, the Safety Engineering Team sought for possible solutions. Two simple actions proved to be effective, clearing vegetation to improve visibility and deploying verge markers. To further help designers understand the bend, Malcolm James and colleagues produced a booklet entitled "Where You Look is Where You Go (WYLIWYG)." The booklet helps road engineering designers understand why there is a problem and what can be done to make the bend safer.
