Abstract

The impact of concentric lane-markings on vehicle deflection, speed and accidents has been investigated for five selected roundabouts in Tyne and Wear. An analysis of Stats 19 accident data at and around the selected roundabouts before and after the implementation of the markings fails to indicate that a significant reduction in the accident rate resulted from this traffic management measure. The evidence presented here also fails to support the notion that the markings cause drivers going straight ahead to deflect more, although there does appear to be some reduction in speed.
