Abstract

The safety of traffic management systems at major roadworks on motorways is periodically monitored by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL). In contrast, little is known about the effects that roadworks on all-purpose roads might have on accident rates. In 1983, Halcrow Fox and Associates were commissioned to design a study methodology whereby accident rates at roadworks on non-motorways could be investigated. Data were then collected by the firm over a 3.5-year period from mid-1984 and analysed in the early part of 1988. This paper first contrasts the different methods applied to the collection of data at roadworks on motorways and all-purpose roads. The structures of the samples of data collected are then summarised, and finally the accident rates at roadworks are presented.
