Abstract

It is now almost three years since the first roadside Crash Cushion was introduced to a British road, at Lancaster Circus in Birmingham in October 1987. Since that date a further nine cushions have been installed, including five more in Birmingham. Collision evidence suggests that in some cases the cushions have prevented serious injury or even death. However, some people still believe that the devices are simply a North American gimmick, with little or no relevance for British highway conditions. This paper seeks to address this issue by examining some of the factors involved in the development of this project in Great Britain. The paper also describes a methodology for site ranking and concludes with an assertion that crash cushions should be used at specific locations to reduce the extent of injury in some frontal collisions.
