Abstract

This paper describes part of some recent research involved in a project aimed at investigating the distribution of accident type by road classes in Melbourne. It examines pedestrian accidents that occurred in 1981 on different road classes of primary arterials, secondary arterials, collector roads and local streets, and demonstrates that there is a variation in the pedestrian accident rates (accident per accident-site) for intersection and link classes. The highest rates were obtained at the higher-order intersection classes of primary/primary, primary/secondary and secondary/secondary types, and the link class of secondary arterial. This paper also reviews some of the previous studies related to the area of accident 'clusters'. It then examines the aspect of clustering of pedestrian accidents, and finds that there is no real clustering of pedestrian accidents on the road hierarchy classes, although there are sites with high frequencies of pedestrian accidents.
