Abstract

This paper describes drivers' speed behavior on rural roads in Greece. The concept of operating speed has been recognized as a basic tool for the determination of individual road element values and for achieving consistency in horizontal alignment design. The relation between operating speed V sub85 on curves and various geometric design parameters has been investigated. The results definitely suggest that the operating speed is strongly related to the curvature and to the desired speed.
