Abstract

This study was conducted on the basis of simple analytical considerations, but also by reffering to experimental observations. The relative velocity of the occupant in the vehicle at the begining of the coupling, that is to say, the speed at which he or she meets the belt, is a very important factor to be considered in the protection. It has been shown that it depends on belt slackness and car deceleration level during the time corresponding to a 'free flight' motion for the occupant. The other key factor is the deceleration level of the car during coupling. The respective influences of these two factors have been assessed and summarized. The methodology this study leads to can easily be used as a useful tool for choosing the best car deceleration curve shapes and thus for making design decisions that meet the goals of protection required.
