Abstract

This paper has analyzed the running characteristics of vehicles and pedestrians on different crossing conditions by studying the three conditions of pedestrian crossing including crossing freely, crossing in non-signalized crosswalk, and crossing in signalized crosswalk. Vehicle delay has been studied under these three conditions on the assumption that the arrival gap between pedestrians and vehicles obeys the negative exponential distribution, and the calculation method of delay under different conditions is described. The result indicates that selecting appropriate crossing mode for pedestrians can effectively decrease the vehicle delay, especially when the traffic of pedestrians and vehicles is heavy. In addition, setting crosswalk (including signal control and non-signal control) can considerably decrease the vehicle delay.
