Abstract

Corrosion and fatigue are two keys and correlated damages attributable to the degradation of existing ships. In the paper, both corrosion and fatigue are treated as non-normal random variables, which are in accordance with the reality. Progressive collapse method is used to calculate ship ultimate hull girder strength and the combination of surface response method and traditional method is utilized to analyse reliability. The new correlation coefficient after normalization is obtained by means of Nataf transformation. Protective maintenance is also considered in a structural reliability context with three repair decisions, i.e. do nothing, minimal repair and replacement. An example application for a bulk carrier is presented. A comparison study between proposed approach and traditional linear method indicates that the former is a reasonable and effective approach with practical value. Finally, the problems discovered in the study are stressed.
