Abstract

Presents the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report of a collision involving a 2015 Tesla Model S 70D automated car that struck a 2003 Utility 3000R refrigerated semitrailer being towed by a 2014 Freightliner Cascadia truck-tractor. The report details the crash, vehicle characteristics and damage, vehicle drivers, and automated vehicle regulations and policies. It describes design domains and safety metrics for automated vehicles, and discusses connected vehicle technology and vehicle to vehicle requirements. The report provides information on the probable cause of the collision and offers safety recommendations based on the NTSB's findings.
