Abstract

In recent years, there have been increased concerns about the safety of highway bridges, as the service duration of many bridges threatens to exceed their design service life. From 1989 to 2000, 503 bridges (ranging in age from 1 year to 157 years) reportedly failed in the United States. In this article, the authors seek to develop high-fidelity finite element models of a typical U.S. highway bridge and to examine the performance of critical highway bridge components during vehicle collisions.
