Abstract

In this article, the authors assess the effect of tire pressure on the deceleration rate of a non-ABS motorcycle with full application of the rear brake only. The testing involves a 2003 Suzuki GSF1200S Bandit with Michelin Pilot radial tires and is conducted on a dry asphalt roadway in Culver City, California. Braking tests are run from 30 mph; three tests involve tires with pressure of 40 psi and three involve tires with pressure of 20 psi. Among the findings, the tests show a higher deceleration rate by the locked-wheel, rear-brake only braking at the lower tire pressure as compared to the higher tire pressure.
