Abstract

Run-off-road (ROR) crashes, in which a single vehicle exits the roadway and rolls over or collides with an object or other car, accounted for 48.7% of crash fatalities in Minnesota in 2013. This article explores risk factors for ROR crashes and current solutions for mitigating these crashes. The article then offers an in-depth discussion of the in-vehicle lane departure warning (LDW) system and presents a study aimed at identifying the optimal level of system reliability that 1) facilitates LDW system efficacy and user acceptance of the system and 2) minimizes workload and users' behavioral adaptation.
