Abstract

This article presents an National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report on passenger vehicle tire safety. In December 2014, the NTSB hosted a Passenger Vehicle Tire Safety symposium to gather information and expert opinions on factors that lead to tire failure. This report shares findings from the symposium as well as findings from two investigations of fatal tire-related motor vehicle crashes. The first involves a sport-utility vehicle and a school bus in Centerville, Louisiana; the second involves a 15-passenger van in Lake City, Florida. Accidents in Eloy, Arizona and Patterson, California are also profiled and an extensive discussion of tire registration and safety recalls is presented.
