Abstract

This article describes results of a study measuring the traction performance of transit and paratransit vehicles, specifically large and mid-sized vehicles, on snowy and icy road surfaces. The authors aim to evaluate transit and paratransit vehicles' stopping and starting traction, cornering traction, hill climbing ability, and lateral traction performance (controllability). The three vehicles tested were a 9-passenger van, 9.1 m transit bus, and a 10.7 m transit bus. The van exhibited shorter stopping distances and smaller starting time than the transit buses on both ice and snow surfaces. The van also showed better hill climbing ability, while no significant difference between the buses and van was seen for cornering speed or controllability.
