Abstract

This article discusses the development of a bridge deck system consisting of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) panels to replace and widen bridge decks and accommodate wider and heavier trucks and farming equipment. The development of crashworthy rails was necessary in order for FRP panels to be used in practice on highway bridges. The article reports the steps to develop two crashworthy rail options: a steel post thrie rail and an F-shaped concrete Jersey Safety Barrier.
