Abstract

A median barrier is a roadway safety and protective device installed between lanes of opposing traffic. While the barrier reduces crash severity and involvement of occupants traveling in the cross-traffic direction, it also poses own safety risk to crash vehicle occupants and can cause vehicle damage. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Project 0-6895 aimed to develop a safer and lower maintenance-requiring median barrier. Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) crash tests were performed on a single-slope barrier (SSTR) to determine crashworthiness. The researchers recommend the use of the Texas SSTR barrier shape due to its performance and adjustability for construction height. They also recommend the use of elastic rubber parts to provide a level of flexibility to the barrier system, making it safer upon impact.
