Abstract

The results of this survey of 115 elite Swedish mountainbike (MB) cyclists showed that 75% had a minor or a major mountainbike related injury. A mailed self-administered injury history questionnaire was used. Seventy-one subjects reported in total 137 MB related minor injures, mostly striking the knees and lower back. Fifty-six subjects reported 79 MB related major injuries mostly occurring in the knees, hands and feet. Seventy-three percent of the cyclists sought medical treatment. The main causes for minor and major injuries were reported as 'too much training' respectively 'fall'. The Chi-square performed to determine the risk factors did not result in any statistical significance although a tendency was seen that those who train more hours per week, especially during pre-season training, incurred fewer injuries. We conclude that better dosed training and the use of better equipment may prevent minor and major injuries.
