Abstract

A survey was carried out to assess the standard practice of restricting direct left turns from driveways and to examine the use of alternatives to direct left turns. Survey questions were sent to 50 state transportation agencies. Responses were received from 25 agencies. Analysis of the survey responses revealed a lack of standards in most states to restrict direct left turns from driveway facilities and provide alternative movements to left-turn deterred traffic. Only a few responding states had implemented a formal policy for left-turn treatments at driveways.
