Abstract

The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) is developing an online training course to help practicing traffic and highway engineers, planners and transportation managers gain a better understanding of the latest public right-of-way guidelines developed by the US Access Board and to illustrate how these guidelines can be applied when designing sidewalks and intersections to accommodate persons with disabilities. The training course includes four modules. Module I is about pedestrian accessibility and Module II covers planning for accessible pedestrian rights-of-way. Module III concerns designing accessible sidewalks and pedestrian access and Module IV is about accessible pedestrain crossings. A test is given upon completion of the training exercise in each of the four modules. If the participants pass the course, they receive a certificate of completion and continuing education units.
