Abstract

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors that the Department of Parking and Traffic investigated the desirability of prohibiting right turns on red at all intersections in San Francisco. As such, it was important for traffic engineers to understand the advantages and disadvantages of prohibiting right turns on red. This paper defends the safety record of California's right turn on red law and takes issue with assertions that this policy increases the risk of collisions.
