Abstract

Highway intersections near railroad grade crossings present traffic engineering challenges that require special consideration. Each location has unique features and factors that must be addressed by traffic engineers working cooperatively with railroad authorities. By adopting and using the terminology developed by the technical working group (TWG) convened by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWS) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and opening lines of communication between highway and railroad practitioners, improvements safety can be achieved at highway intersections near railroad grade crossings.
