Abstract

The Neighborhood Traffic Management (NTM) in Australia called Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) is discussed. The traffic management is implemented to control the speeds and traffic flow in neighborhood streets by the use of physical devices. The term traffic calming was introduced into Australia by an anti-road action group which argued that NTM had failed and that traffic calming was something different. Traffic calming has been given a wide range of meanings, not all of which seem at first to be true to the origins of the concept and some of which seem to be contradictory.
