Abstract

The Institute of Transportation Engineers Committee 4S-2, Pedestrian Information Plaques, is formed to investigate the usage of signs or plaques that explain to pedestrians the meaning of pedestrian signals. The committee's effort included a literature search of relevant materials and mail questionnaires for pedestrian responses at traffic signals and to inform pedestrians about the meaning of pedestrian signals. Forty percent of respondents use special signs to inform pedestrians about the meaning of the pedestrian signals. Symbolized pedestrian signals only are in use in 31% of respondents' areas, while 47% have a mixture of legend and symbol lenses. The 1995 Federal Highway Administration study pointed out limited effectiveness of the plaques.
