Abstract

Presented is a practical approach to help develop and maintain reliable time-of-day coordination between traffic-actuated signals. System-controlled traffic signal timing based on time of day is widely used by public agency staff in the United States. The analysis technique described involves examining real-time data information on the effectiveness of current coordination plans for traffic-actuated signals and using this information to simulate signal progression conditions on an average basis. Opportunities for improving expanded average bandwidths also are identified.
